The Facts About Abortion
There are two views when it comes to abortion. They are pro-life and pro-choice. Pro-life is when you feel the embryo/fetus has the right to live. Pro-choice is when you feel that a woman has the right to choose to terminate the embryo/fetus. Before 1972, abortion was illegal. This changed after a court case known as Roe vs. Wade. The court decided that life begins after 6 months and it was legal to terminate the pregnancy before then. Even though this became a national law, different states, such as Kentucky, have their own laws as well. In the state of Kentucky, it is legal to have an abortion in the first 3 months and not have a reason for one. If 4-6 months pregnant, the mother's life must be in danger for there to be an abortion. There are several procedures for having an abortion as listed below:
- If it is the 1st-2nd week of pregnancy, they will give you a hormone pill.
- If you are 1-3 months pregnant, they will use a vacuum/ suction cup to suck out the embryo. They might also use a curette which is a hook that scrapes the walls of the uterus to remove the embryo.
- In months 4-6, they inject a saline type of solution into the fetus, killing it. They might also remove the fetus by caesarean section or give drugs to induce labor.
